Hello all, I’ll be telling you more about using wordpress and having an account made with it. Before I do, I’ll just talk about the process I went through in full… and it’s going to take me a long time!!- The reason why I made a new page!
Before I made a wordpress account, my original server I was with was michaelgrigsby (click here) . While attempting to change/edit some information, some vital code was deleted resulting in an internal server error. I couldn’t access that server again everything was lost what I done, therefore had to make a new account!
Naturally I was gutted but had some words of encouragement from Nick and Mez…
‘The grigsby server hasn’t gone down her part of it has corrupted because she
Has deleted some vital parts of the php code without first copying and
Backing up the code she was altering.
I have replaced parts of the php but haven’t been able to get into it to
make it work again.
With the wordpress.com she has quite a lot of
Functionality, lots of themes to choose from plus the use of sidebar widgets
Including flickr and delicious among others.
This functionality can be found under the presentation area of the admin
Panel. One of the tabs is called sidebar widgets.
As you say what has happened to her installation and documenting how it
Happened to her will all be taking into account in the final mark’
- Nick
I then made a wordpress account and started the process of making this blog…
The good points
The good points from having a wordpress account
• I have a good selection of themes to choose from
• WordPress is easily accessible
• The admin area is user friendly
• WordPress are just beginning to add more sidebar widget features (box.net, tag cloud)
If I was to make a simple blog, the features already with wordpress are acceptable. However, as the main purpose of this module is to explore and experiment different plugins widgets and the web2 application- I have come across more bad points leading to limitations with what I can do.
The bad points
• I can’t add any plugins manually if I wanted to. WordPress simply rejects any plugins or embedded coding.
• The only widgets I can use are the ones available on the wordpress server in the sidebar widgets. I can only add sidebar widgets that wordpress accept. Other than that, I can’t add anything
• I can’t add embebbed coding, e.g. games, iframe or anything apart from images, ‘rockyou’ presentation, Google and Youtube videos (all come standard with wordpress). I can’t add anything else e.g. games, iframe etc
• I can’t include any internal links to new pages. By this I mean, if I want to create a new page inside a category, i wouldn’t be able to as I’m not given any option.
All these have limited me a lot to what I can and can’t do. In my sidebar widgets, I have tried to add and configure to make the maximum use of widgets. I have tried various widgets- many of which are not accepted on wordpress as well as different plugins.
So on a whole my advice is…
If you want a simple user friendly blog that doesn’t require much, then wordpress is fine
BUT
If need that little something more, then choose a server which gives you more variety with what you can do!
Hope this bit of info helps anyone thinking to start a blog using wordpress.com
I’ve added the following presentation I come across. You can go through it yourself, but I just added these in this page as I think it sums up web2.0. Even though the first presentation (below) is aimed towards why students should start using web2, I think it just generally sums what wordpress is about…and something worth putting towards my essay (and helping me understand more about web2)
